A Kardashian-Disick Shabbat

Don't deny it--you have peeked at an episode of the rich and luxurious lifestyle of the Kardashians.  Everyone has seen or heard something about them. And well, I must admit, I'm at fault for watching the show sometimes. I can't take my eyes off of Kim's clothes and shoes! Can you blame a woman?

Last month, however, they had a rather interesting episode. Scott Disick, Kourtney Kardashian's boyfriend and baby daddy, decided to revisit his Jewish heritage and get in touch with his spiritual side. It was a surprise to me that he was Jewish to begin with (clearly I don't pay attention to anything but the fashion on the show), so I paid closer attention to the episode.

Basically, Scott becomes a Jew for one episode. He convinces Kourtney that he wants to celebrate Shabbat and goes on a shopping spree to buy all the necessary tools.  Before you know it, you see Scott setting he table, with a Kiddush cup, Shabbat candle holders (we sell the same ones on our site!), a Hamotzi bread cover, and Manishevitz wine. You  know, the Shabbat table usual suspects. He ordered food for dinner, invited friends, got a prayer book and attempted to read collectively the English transliteration.
I must say, I'm not sure I got the point of the episode. So Scott turned Jew for one episode, now what? He said he wants to teach Mason about his side of the family as well and his heritage, but will a random Shabbat celebration, really teach a child about their Jewish heritage?

Jerusalem Candle Holder -available for $16.99

Maybe, just maybe, I'm putting too much thought into this reality show.  Let's stick to the fashion!

A Formal Table Affair

A formal table setting is a must have for a sit down dinner party at home.  It just makes everything more beautiful and your guests will enjoy their time at the table much more. Now, if you are not in the mood to a complete formal table setting but rather would like to add a little bit of elegance to our tabletop, you can add one or two tips you read here instead of applying the entire set of instructions.

I like to add gold chargers to my formal table settings. They add sparkle and elegance.

The first thing you'll need to look out for is flatware.  The more formal the occasion, the more courses are served and the more flatware is needed. Each course requires a set of utensils: salad fork, dinner fork; dinner knife, break knife, and so on.

Some special dishes, such as oysters have special utensils.  Fish dishes generally have a fish knife as well. Most flatware sets do not include utensils for oysters or fish. You'd have to buy those separately. For serving, special dishes are served at presentation with the proper utensil.

Let's get started. To the left of the plate you place the dinner fork. To the left of that, you put the salad fork.

On the right side, you start with the dinner knife, closest to the plate, followed by the dinner spoon. After the dinner spoon (to the right of the dinner spoon) add a soup spoon, if soup is going to be served. The soup bowl needs to be placed above the soup spoon,  towards the right.

Are you following?? Use the image below as a guide.

Here comes the rest....

You need a small bread plate, which generally includes one small slice of bread. Or you have a bread basket with sliced bread for every 4 people handy, so each can grab their own.  The bread plate is situated on the left, above the dinner fork. The butter knife is placed across the bread plate at a diagonal, upper left to lower right.

Place the small salad plates to the left, a little below the bread place.

Dessert spoons, or in some cases knife and fork, are placed about an inch above the top of the plate with the handles on the right side.

Now for the placing of glassware.  The largest glass or goblet is for water and placed above the dinner knife. Whether you want to have it pre-filled with ice water or allow your guests to do it once they are there, is completely up to you. If you are planning to serve other beverages (i.e. soda or wine), make sure to use the appropriate glass to the right of the water glass.  Red wine goblets usually have a wider bottom, white wine glasses are slimmer.

Happy entertaining!
